Manchester United veteran, Ryan Giggs, believes that the club’s recent signing of Robin van Persie has sent out a clear message of intent to their Premier League title rivals.

Alex Ferguson’s men finished last season without a single piece of silverware, after they prematurely crashed out of the various cup competitions but perhaps worst of all, they were pipped to the title on the final day by bitter local rivals, Manchester City.

This was the first time they had failed to win anything since 2005, a development that has prompted a huge response from Ferguson, forcing him to bring in a number of new players, most notably, last year’s Premier League top scorer, Robin van Persie, from Arsenal.

After occasionally struggling for goals at times over the last few years, the Dutchman is expected to add an extra cutting edge to the Red Devils’ frontline, as they look end their trophy drought both home and abroad.

Giggs believes the signing has sent out a huge message to United’s rivals, and shows that they are more determined than ever to claim back the Premier League title.

"It [the Van Persie signing] sends out a big message," said the Welshman. "And it's great when a player comes out and says he wants to come to the club as well.

"It wasn't a nice feeling to lose the title last season - it never is, but it was the manner in which we lost it which was tough to take.

"I'm biased but players should want to come to United because you're always guaranteed to be up there challenging for trophies, there's a great team spirit, top facilities and you get to play for a great manager," he added.
