Manchester United vs Manchester City

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has conceded that his side may have to win all of their remaining games to pip Manchester City to the title.

Of course, in terms of simple mathematics, this view carries some weight. City may be two points clear at the top of the Premier League but with the duo set to battle each other on 30 April, the winner of this tie could clinch the league crown.

However, care must be taken if you believe this to be the case. There is a tendency to think that the top sides will always prevail but in England’s top flight this is rarely the case. United almost slipped up against Norwich City on Sunday, while City lost to Everton and Sunderland in January alone.

The old adage that there are no easy games in the Premier League is certainly true and although it’s difficult to see where either side will drop points, this doesn’t mean that the title will rest on the result of one game. I suspect there will be plenty of surprise results and scores to come in the coming weeks.

City are the favourites in the sports betting but it is very, very close and set to go down to the wire.

United face a wounded Spurs side at White Hart Lane this weekend, while City face Chelsea later in March. The Blues have already beaten Roberto Mancini’s men at Stamford Bridge this campaign and with their aim of finishing fourth, will be a tricky prospect again.

One thing that may count in United’s favour is that they have experience of winning titles, with Sir Alex Ferguson conceding as much on MUTV. And while City may have the advantage – both in terms of points and the fact that they host United – Ferguson’s men have more in their arsenal when it comes to getting the job done.

Furthermore, they have a more favourable fixture to end their campaign, against a Sunderland side likely to be stuck in mid-table. Meanwhile, City face QPR, who could be battling the drop so don’t expect formalities in the race for the title.
