Surprised Lydiate Clinches Award

Wales flanker Dan Lydiate has been rewarded for his scintillating form in this year’s Six Nations by clinching the Player of the Tournament award, topping off a sensational few weeks for the 23-year old. Lydiate was a deserved winner of the award and not many could have argued with the impact the youngster has made to a Welsh side that consistently wrote the sport news headlines with a series of sensational performances on their way to a Grand Slam.

Lydiate was the favourite in the betting to land the award, despite going up against the likes of team-mates Sam Warburton, Alex Cuthbert and Mike Phillips. The flanker eventually came away with 25% of the votes. Ireland fly-half Jonathan Sexton came in second, with Italy’s influential skipper Sergio Parisse in third.

Lydiate admitted his surprise at coming out on top in a star-studded line-up - with didn’t contain any English players – revealing the award was a bonus following Wales’ success in this year’s tournament.

The Newport man has formed a formidable partnership with captain Warburton on the other flank of the Welsh pack, the duo also teaming up with Toby Faletau at the number-eight to give Wales one of the most dynamic loose-forward trios currently in the business.
