Djokovic concedes Best Man Won

World number one, Novak Djokovic, was humble in defeat, as Rafael Nadal won a record seventh French Open title at Roland Garros, on Monday. However, the result did not come as much of a surprise to the sport betting pages.

Djokovic was aiming to become only the third man in history to hold all four Grand Slam titles simultaneously, but had no answer to the ‘King of Clay’, losing 6-4 6-3 2-6 7-5 in a rain-affected final.

"The better player won today, so congratulations for that," Djokovic said. "He is definitely the best player in history on this surface, and results are showing that he is one of the best players that ever played this game, and he is only 26 years old."

Nadal led the match 6-4 6-3 2-6 1-2 when rain forced the players off, on Sunday. The weather halted Djokovic’s increasing momentum, after he had won eight games in a row, but he refused to blame the rain or the decision by tournament officials to delay the match into Monday.

"Playing conditions were not good. But it's not anybody's fault, and it's not the reason why I lost today," he added. In fact, Djokovic had gone into the final as the underdog in the online betting.

The victory extended Nadal’s incredible record in the French capital. The Spaniard has won 52 matches at Roland Garros, losing just once against Robin Soderling in the fourth round, in 2009.

Nadal has now gone past the six French Open titles won by Swedish legend, Bjorn Borg, and took his career majors total to 11. He was emotional after his record-breaking success.

"It is an honour and, for me, the most important tournament, the greatest in my eyes," said Nadal.

"This is an unforgettable moment for me – there are a lot of emotions. It was a privilege to play against one of the best players in the world."
