Top Women's Stars Making Grass Plans

There is a huge summer of grass court tennis ahead for all of the women’s top players, with both Wimbledon and the London 2012 Olympic tennis tournament taking place at the All England Club.

The AEGON International in Eastbourne has long been seen as a key competition for some of the best females in the world, and 2012 is no exception, as some of the leading ranked players are heading there to prepare for Wimbledon.

The men’s competition does not seem to carry as much influence, due to the Queen’s Club tournament taking most of the headlines. However, both tournaments are worth a bet.

This year, defending Wimbledon champion, Petra Kvitova, reigning AEGON International champion, Marion Bartoli, former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, and 2008 French Open champion, Ana Ivanovic will be taking part.

Such a high quality field, with five of the world’s top ten confirmed to attend, means that all of the women there will have a tough workout – vital, if they wish to win at Wimbledon, only a few weeks later.

The pre-Wimbledon grass-court event will attract a bumper crowd, when it runs from 16th -23rd June, especially as plenty of home British players are likely to be given wild cards. Wimbledon closely follows at SW19, with the third Grand Slam of the year starting on June 25th.

Only three weeks after the culmination of the event, the London 2012 Tennis competition arrives at the All England Club, with Rafael Nadal the defending men’s champion and Elena Dementieva winning the women’s gold in Beijing 2008.
